Orlando—equally enjoyed by 6-year-old girls and 44-year-old mustached salesmen. From Mickey Mouse suits to suit-and-tie conventions, O-Town’s got it goin on.

This year, it was also home to the National Business Aviation Association’s Business Aviation Conference & Exhibition, one of the largest private aviation conferences in the world. One of the 1,000 companies in attendance was yours truly, represented by its underdressed cofounders. We tried to add some “coolness” with t-shirts and jeans while nearly everyone else sweated in blazers, slacks, and dresses.

Orlando isn’t exactly known as a “health city.” Yet, like most American destinations, the major airport—Orlando International (MCO)—has healthy options if you know where to look. Again, we’ve done the hard work of finding the healthiest options, just as in our other Airport Survival Guide entries: Los Angeles, Chicago O’Hare, New York LaGuardia, Atlanta, San Francisco, Charleston, Denver, and Boston.

We usually break down the scene by terminal, but MCO has a unique layout, so we’ll give you options by both terminal and gate number.

Let’s get to the healthy hacks.

Gates 1-29 (Terminal A)

The go-to

Zaza Cuban Comfort Food

Fair warning that most of the options here are heavy, which is why we stick to the sides. Frequent readers will recognize our “sides only” approach and other work-around hacks.
What to get: Using the sides, build your own salad bowl with black beans, brown rice, a side salad, and roasted veggies. Voila…a well-balanced, flavorful, plant-powered meal.

Backup #1

On the Border

Here you’ll find sides similar to those at Zaza, though a bit lower quality and less healthy. Get a veggie fajita salad, no cheese, dressing on the side, or a Portobello Border Bowl with no cheese.

Backup #2

Urban Crave

Grab a Chop-Chop Salad, meat optional, with no cheese and dressing on the side.

Gates 30-59 (Terminal B)

The go-to

Nature’s Table

This is a reasonably healthy place with several healthy-leaning options.
What to get: Our favorite is the Chili-Cado with no cheese, which includes veggie chili, avocado, kale, spinach, quinoa, and brown rice. If that’s a little too heavy, check out the smoothie and acai bowl options, of course being careful of added sugars, sweeteners, and fruit juices.

The backups

There’s another Zaza location here, so see our recommendation above.

At Qdoba, you can pull the M&M (Mexican & Mediterranean) trump card here with a simple bowl with beans, veggies and guacamole. Standard and good.

Camden Food Co. is a nice surprise. The build-your-own salad or sandwich here is great for an afternoon flight. Earlier in the day, get the oatmeal bar, nuts and fruit.

Gates 70-99 (Terminal B)

The go-to

Tacos Locos

This is probably the toughest part of MCO to find a healthy and tasty option. Tacos Locos is the best bet thanks to the M&M principle.
What to order: Chop Salad, no cheese, with beans, guac, and veggies.

The backups

Again, it’s tough sledding over here. MCO MKT has some salad options that are decent if not a bit too airport-ish. Otherwise, snag a bar and some fruit or nuts at CIBO Express or try for the Starbucks secret.

Gates 100-129 (technically Terminal A 🤷🏻‍♂️)

The go-to

Green Leaf’s/Bananas

This chain’s airport location is that ideal airport combo of great health and decent-enough taste. The basic move is again a build-your-own salad, and add a smoothie and if you’re really hungry or you’re sharing with a partner.
What to get: Custom salad with mixed greens and spinach, tomatoes, onions, broccoli, chickpeas, avocado, walnuts, sunflower seeds, and balsamic vinegar on the side. On the smoothie side, get a green smoothie with banana, spinach, peanut butter, blueberries, and almond milk. And again, kick the added sweeter and fruit juice back to Universal Studios.

Bonus: New Terminal C

Terminal C has only been open since the summer, so most of its eateries are still “coming soon.” Of the open options, one of them might be the healthiest place to eat in all of MCO. So, if you’re flying internationally or JetBlue—or you have some extra time to hop terminals—you’re in luck.

The go-to

Greenbeat

This is an #actualltyhealthy special where we can legitimately eat a healthy meal here that is also delicious.
What to get: Build-your-own bowl with kale and quinoa as the base, and add spicy broccoli, black beans, onions, roasted cauliflower, tomatoes, avocado, and balsamic dressing on the side.

The backup

The best option for now in the new terminal is an oatmeal from Starbucks.

Fun facts about MCO

  • MCO is the seventh-busiest airport in the country, even busier than Miami International.
  • The airport’s code, MCO, comes from its former name, McCoy Air Force Base, which was named after Colonel Michael Norman Wright McCoy. Military flights to the airport stopped in 1975.
  • The brand new Terminal C took about five years and cost $2.8 billion to complete. #worthit
  • MCO is a leading American airport in terms of initiatives focused on environmental impact and sustainability. These programs include goals to reduce the airport’s dependency on fossil fuels, lower potable water use, preserve natural lands; divert landfill waste, build more eco-friendly facilities, and support alternative transportation.
