While most weeks we bring you information about the art and science of eating healthier while traveling, there’s a whole lot more behind our mission of empowering an on-the-go healthy lifestyle.

Our daily work with pilots, flight attendants, and commercial and general aviation businesses keeps us collaborating with people whose lives are…up in the air. We want to share the wealth of knowledge they’ve accumulated about how to stay at your best while on the move.

So today, we’ll change it up a bit and bring you the “secrets of the sky” from studly pilot Jack Weber.

First, a little background on Jack. His advice related to flying is deeper than his experience alone; Jack’s father and brother are both pilots. You may recognize his brother Peter…dreamy.

Jack went to UCLA and graduated in 2017 with a degree in—wait for it—applied mathematics. From there, he followed in his family’s footsteps and went to flight school.

Jack is accomplished, intelligent, energetic, and most importantly, a hell of a nice guy. Without further ado, here are Jack’s secrets.

airfare: What is the absolute best brand and model of carry-on luggage?

Jack: LuggageWorks! If you look carefully, you’ll notice every pilot almost always uses this brand. My dad still has his original bag from almost 35 years ago!

airfare: What are the one or two things you bring with you on the plane that make travel 100% better, easier, more fun?

Jack: If you fly frequently, you can buy a membership an airline’s WiFi, which ends up being way cheaper over the long haul and makes those flights without any service so much more bearable.

airfare: What are the most underrated North American destinations or cities?

Jack: Omaha, Nebraska is one of my favorite layovers. It has an amazing, nationally ranked zoo and tons of great Mexican food!

airfare: What is one thing flight crew or frequent travelers know about flying that most passengers have no clue about?

Jack: Don’t drink the coffee!

airfare: What is one perk available in airports that most travelers don’t take advantage of?

Jack: There are tons of credit cards that allow access to the frequent flyer clubs across a variety of airlines, like American Express Platinum and Chase Sapphire Preferred. Even though the annual fees can be expensive, if you plan to leave for the airport two hours earlier and utilize the lounges for lunch or dinner, you’ll more than easily pay for the annual fee just from the savings on food alone annually.

airfare: What is something you learned about air travel that you didn’t know before you started working as a pilot?

Jack: If you get to a hotel where the blinds don’t shut fully and let a slimmer of light in your room, there’s always a hangar in the closet with clips that you can use to keep it shut!

[airfare comment: Applied mathematics at work! As we say at our office in Boston, this guy is wicked smaht.]

airfare: What is your most embarrassing air travel story?

Jack: Definitely walking around the airport in uniform after 30 minutes just to realize my fly was down the entire time.
