Last week, we went over the fiber-heavy, protein-laden, inflammation-zapping reasons why beans are #actuallyhealthy. We’ve always encouraged loading up with legumes in snacks from partners like Lupii and WellBean, and now, we’re even beanier, baby.
We’re excited to introduce two of our newest snack partners, both of whom are spreading beans faster than Jack and his notorious stalk.
Eat More Beans
The coolest thing about this company is that it started in 1951…in Japan.
Kazuo Yanagimoto started Eat More Beans selling beans, grains and other condiments in Japan only, and it wasn’t until the 2000s that he perfected the technology to be able to serve steamed beans all the way in the West.
Eventually, Eat More Beans brought this new tech to U.S. soil and set up shop in Northern California. This completed the long cycle of applying the proficiency and simplicity of eastern technology to the massive lack of bean consumption in the American diet. You could say we barely have a pulse… 😐
Boy are we grateful for Kazuo’s ingenuity. We love the versatility of Eat More Beans’ snacks—Justin likes to eat them straight up, while Geremy loves adding them to salads and bowls. Whichever you prefer, just make sure to follow the brand’s advice: eat more beans.
Seapoint Farms
While Seapoint Farms doesn’t have a 70-year track record in the snacking game, it has been working on its beans for decades, and it now makes the best damn edamame around.
In 1996—back when MJ and the Chicago Bulls won 70 games, Tiger Woods played his first PGA tour event, and Bob Dole ran for president—Laura and Kevin Cross started Seapoint Farms in Huntington Beach, California. The Crosses have become edamame pioneers, and over the last 25 years have grown to be the largest importer and manufacturer of edamame products in the country.
The snacks
The issue we take with most bean products is that they are roasted in oils—often unhealthy ones—at high heats. This is a double whammy due to the potential health hazards and the added calories and unneeded ingredients.
There are two ways to escape this fatty fate: dry roast or steam. These two techniques are exactly what Eat More Beans and Seapoint Farms do, which is why you’ll notice much higher protein and fiber per calorie in their snacks.
Now, on to the snacks…
Dry Roasted Edamame
These are perfecting for getting you through a busy day of travel, work, or adventure. Packing 20 grams of protein and eight grams of fiber into a 200-calorie pack of roasted goodness, this mix of soybeans and salt is simple and scrumptious. In addition to their healthy macros, vitamins and nutrients, soybeans have been linked to lower cholesterol and less heart disease and prostate and breast cancers.
Steamed Chickpeas
We’re bananas for these single-serving pouches of garbanzos. In addition to the aforementioned benefits of bean health, these chickpeas are—like the name says—steamed, which locks in natural freshness, flavor and consistency, in addition to the full load of nutrition. For a 110-calorie, lean protein pick-me-up, look no further.
Steamed Perfect Bean Mix
This is called the “Perfect Mix” for good reason. The variety of organic chickpeas, soybeans, green peas, kidney beans, and black beans is the full legume load. If you’re able to resist these as a snack, try them on top of a salad.
