But here's the thing: it was almost a burrito. 😳
Back when he was working a corporate gig, Taylor Jones came across a book called Start Something That Matters by Blake Mycoskie, the founder of the shoe brand, Toms. Before that book, Jones’s dreamt of starting a company focused on a food he craved: burritos. After reading the Mycoskie's book, however, he decided focus his company on food that mattered.
“I was surviving off of energy bars while traveling and living an active lifestyle," Taylor said. "I wanted more out of what I was putting in my body so I began making my own."
At the time in 2012, the Michigan-raised Jones worked in a cubicle in New Jersey by day, but by night was experimenting in his mother’s kitchen. He mixed various nuts, fruits, and seeds that would eventually become the foundational flavors of the first Jonesbars.
After months of taste testing and iterating his formula, Taylor thought he had a product that would sell. He packed the bars by hand-wrapping them with wax paper and hand-writing "Jonesbar" with a marker. Lastly—and this is our favorite part—he sealed a handful of bars in mason jars. “It was a simple process,” he said. “Customers would finish their bars, return the jar and repeat.” Score one for the planet.
After nearly two years of iteration and local sales, Taylor and his small team were ready to take the next step. They started focusing on the brand, designed top-notch packaging, and then..."needed to move production out of mom’s kitchen.” They opened a 125-square-foot facility in a tiny beach town in New Jersey in September 2015.
After two years selling thousands of Jonesbars from the space in in Sea Grit, NJ, it was time to move on again, this time to their current 4,000-square-foot space in Manasquan.
Jonesbar's slogan sums up what the company makes: “Nothing added. Nothing hidden. Just real food.” Just like all of the products that we offer at airfare, Jonesbars are made from only the real-food ingredients listed below.
Another thing we love about Jonesbar is the authenticity of the brand. These snacks are real-food energy bars made by someone who is active and on the go—just like us, the snack brands we partner with, and all of our customers. And we admire the fact that, although Taylor loves burritos (who doesn’t?), he made a health-conscious choice to create a food that not only provides energy, but creates it.
