Let's start with the obvious: salads top the list of healthy food options. Greens, veggies, maybe some lentils and walnuts, a simple dressing, and you’re in good shape. Case closed.

That said, salads present a few logistical problems, especially for pilots, flight attendants, aviation professionals, or anyone frequently on the go. To put it formally—ain’t nobody got time for that.

For one thing, salad's are on the tougher end of the effort spectrum. It’s hard to wolf down leaves of kale and florets of cauliflower amidst the usual mayhem of travel, slammed with back-to-back Zoom calls, or rushing to a connecting flight in 20 minutes. You want a faster option.

Salads are also notoriously hard to preserve. The spinach starts to wilt, the avocado oxidizes, and the raspberries grow mold.

Finally—and maybe hardest to overcome—the healthiest salads are often the ones we prepare ourselves. No one knows this better than the prepping professionals in the flight deck: pilots. Add up the time shopping for groceries, chopping the veggies, and getting the Tupperware situation straight, and you've probably missed the flight.

Even skipping the prep work, good luck finding a quality salad at most of our nation's airports. While our team has certainly uncovered some gems at various airports (LAX, ATL, ORD, and LGA), it’s often slim pickings. 

All together, these reasons—convenience, ease of eating, and the lack of healthy options—are why we started airfare. Salads aren’t always available, and a fast-paced, on-the-go lifestyle shouldn't limit our ability to stay healthy.
